Athens Beaches: A description of the
beaches of Athens

Glyfada
is a wealthy suburb located in the south part of
Athens where Athenians go to relax themselves in
their second residences. It is one of the most famous
summertime neighbours for the reason that the area
offers a lot of cafés, bars and clubs.
Glyfada also proposes a quantity of luxurious shops
and hotels.
Many large sandy beaches are located in this area
but there are usually private and fully organised
with an expensive entrance right.
Varkiza is a sandy beach located in the south east
coast. Is one of the less crowded beaches for the
reason that it is located the most far away from
Athens' centre.
But it is easily accessible by bus.
It is an organised beach offering a lot of facilities:
tennis and volleyball courts which can be hired
per hour, day or evening, a water slide, snack bars
and a play area for children.
The sandy beach of Voula is also located in the
south east coast but less far than Varkiza. It is
private and organised beach owned.
The beach proposes many activities and facilities:
tennis and volley courts, water slide, water sports
facilities and snack bars.
This is the best private and organised sandy beach
in the area of Athens. It offers all kind of facilities:
tennis and volleyball courts, play area for children,
water slide, individual cabins and a restaurant.
The
Cape Sounion is situated 65 km from Athens centre
and is one of the most famous places in the area.
The Cape Sounion is characterised by the amazing
Temple of Poseidon which stands on a rocky promontory
above the Aegean.
The Temple was first built around 600 B.C and was
destroyed in 480 B.C by the Persians. It was then
rebuilt in 440 B.C by the reconstruction program
of Pericles.
Many nice sandy beaches are located in the area.
Schinias is a long sandy and pine-fringed beach
located in the south-east of the famous area of
Marathon. It is one of the best beaches of this
part of Attica.
The beach is very popular and get really crowded
during the hot summer week ends.
This beach is well known by windsurfers. A nice
windsurfing club is located there.
Schinias can be easily be reached by bus.
Loutsa is a sandy beach located in the east coast
of Athens and it is the nearest beach from Athens
centre. Because of its proximity it's usually really
crowded and quite dirty. The place is well known
from the windsurfers. There is a couple a windsurfing
clubs that are popular even in winter.
The coast road of Loutsa offers a lot of fish taverns,
cafés, bars and clubs.
Alimos is situated in the southern part of athens.
Because of its proximity from the centre of athens
this long sandy beach attracts a lot of athenians
every weekends and during the hot summer days.
Rafina is situated on Attica's east coast and it
is the second port for passenger ferries of Athens.
It appears like a smaller, quieter and less confusing
version of Piraeus.
Ferries live daily to Andros, Hydra, Lesvos and
Limnos and also for the port of Marmari and Karystos
on the island of Evia. Otherwise, you can choose
to take one of the fine high-speed catamarans for
Tinos, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, and Amorgos.
Some nice sandy beaches can be found in the area
like the Kokkini Limanaki.

The beach of Kokkino Limanaki is situated 1.5 km
from the town of Rafina. It is an impressive sandy
beach located in a creek and surrounded by a peculiar
red cliff.
The beach is a quiet and clean place. A camping
site is located there as well as some interesting
fish taverns.
You can find there a sandy beach surrounded by small
fish restaurant and café, as well some small
creeks, unfortunately quite crowded.
Vavrona is known as a town that was belonging to
the mythical King Cecrops, the founder of Athens.
It is an interesting area which offers many nice
sandy beaches but also cultural interests such as
the Sanctuary of Artemis. |
