The church of Panaghia Kapnikarea |
The
church is located in Ermou Street, one of Athen's
most famous streets, well known for it many fashion
shops.
The church was built in the 11th century on the
ruins of an ancient temple that was possibly dedicated
to the Goddess Athena or Demeter. The church has
an interesting architecture. It is a cross-in-square
church and its dome is supported by four Roman columns.
The church's interiors are also of great interest.
The icons are the work of the modern artist Fotis
Kontoglou.

The church of Agii Theodori |
The
church is located west of Plateia Klafthmonos. It
must been built on the place of an older structure,
maybe an oldest Byzantine church. According to plaques
built into the west wall, the church was renovated
in 1065 AD by Nicolaos Calomalos.
The church was damaged in 1821 during the Greek
Independence War and was restored in 1840. The church's
interiors wall paintings are dated to the 19th century.

The church of Panagia Gorgoepikoos or Agios
Eleftherios |
The church is located on Plateia Mitropoleos in
the famous neighbourhood of Plaka and stands next
to the large and modern Cathedral of Metropolis.
This church has a much more important historical
value than its neighbour and was built on the ruins
of an ancient temple which was dedicated to the
Goddess Eileithyia.
It is a cross-in-square church built with Pendelic
marble and decorated with marble murals, some dating
from the 4th century BC, on which are represented
the twelve months.

The
church is located near the southern entrance of
the Ancient Agora. It is dated to the 11th century
and was built in honour of St Paul who came to Athens
and more especially at the Agora to proclaim Christianity.
The church was renovated to its original form in
1854-57. The church's interiors are also of great

frescoes.

Church of Panagia Hrysospiliotissa |
This church is situated behind the Theatre of Dionysos,
in a small grotto and can be reached by a rock path.
The church is full of old pictures and icons. The
church is built on the place of an ancient temple
that was dedicated to Dionysos. That is the reason
why two Ionic columns still can be seen above the
chapel.
The church is situated 30 minutes by bus from the
town's centre. The church is dated to the 11th century
and it is considered as the most important Byzantine
monument of Attica.
The temple was named after the Daphne laurels witch
was sacred to Apollo.
The church was destroyed by the Goths in the 4th
century but an Ionic column can still be seen. The
church has extremely fine mosaics considered as
one of Greece's finest and represents saints, monks,
apostles, prophets and guardian archangels. But
the most impressive thing is the representation
of the Christos Pantokrator (Christ in Majesty)
in the centre of the dome.
According to history, the monastery was sacked by
the renegades of the Fourth Crusades. The church
was rebuilt and occupied by monks until the War
of Greek independence. It was then used as an army
barrack and finally as a hospital for the mentally
ill.
The
Moni of Kaissariani is situated 5km east of Athens
near the top of Mont Hymettus. The Monastery is
located in a beautiful area surrounded by pine trees,
cypress trees and wild flowers.
The church is dated to the 11th century and is dedicated
to the Presentation of the Virgin. It was built
on the place of an ancient temple dedicated to Demeter,
a goddess of nature of Agriculture. A second temple
erected there during the Roman period.
The actual monastery was built using material from
the Roman temple and that is the reason of the existence
of four columns.
The church's interior is also of great interest.
There are beautiful frescoes dating from the 16th
and 17th century.
There is a spring located above the hill, source
of the river Ilissos whose waters were once sacred
to Aphrodite and therefore believed to cure infertility.
