The famous district of Plaka
is the area where rugs and carpets can be
found as many shops are concentrated there
and offering hand-made and industrial carpets
and flokati rugs.
The flokati rugs are part of Greek tradition
for centuries. There were hand-made by shepherds,
from the mountain areas of central and northern
Greece, to protect themselves and their
families from the cold winter.
The actual main production areas are around
the town of Tripolis, in the Peloponnese,
and around the towns of Trikala and Karditsa
in Thessaly.
The carpets are also part of Greek tradition
as a lot of references of the art of making
carpets can be found in the mythology (Homere's
Illiad and Oddyse). Today, the most important
centres of hand-weaving are in Lefkada,
Anogeia and Metsovo.
The district of Plaka houses the National
Organisation of Greek Handicrafts where
many rugs and carpets are exhibited.
An other important Greek product is the leather.
Many fine leather items of all qualities and
prices can be found in Athens.
Kolonaki and Ermou Street offer a great amount
of boutiques proposing expensive shoes and
handbags.
For cheaper items, the recommended districts
are Plaka, Monastiraki or psiri. The neigborhood
of Psiri is mostly dedicated to leather: hand
made gloves, hats and handbags but only a
few leather shoes.

Traditional handicrafts |
Plaka and Monastiraki are the best place to
find some nice traditional handicrafts. Plaka
has the National Welfare Organisation shops,
the Traditional Greek Center, the Hellenic
Artisan Trades Cooperative or the Lyceum of
Greek women. They propose knotted carpets,
embroidered cushion covers, woodwork and much
more.
Jewellery is an ancestral tradition and today,
gold and silver jewellery are fine and beautiful
Greek specialities. High qualities jewelleries
shops can be found on Stadiou and Voukourestiou
streets, near Syndagma and the most famous
names are represented: Ilias Lalaounis, Bvlgari
or Kessaris. The best place to buy silvers
items is in Plaka and Monastiraki.
In Greece, it is illegal to buy or sale ancient
times items. Only reproduction can be found.
But you still can discover some nice one or
two century old antiques at the flea Market
in Monastiraki, in the district of Kolonaki
or at the Piraeus market.
